Future Team Canada Program
The Wayne Gretzky Foundation Future Team Canada Program invites minor hockey teams across Canada to submit essays on why they think their team would make a future Team Canada. Based on a variety of factors, including dedication to sport and the community as exhibited through volunteerism, thirteen teams across Canada are identified and provided hockey equipment and financing to pursue their hockey dreams. Teams receiving support in 2008 included the Clearwater Icehawks, Les Barons du Cap-de-la-Madeleine, and the Almonte Pakenham Thunder, among others.
Iqaluit Amateur Hockey Association
The Iqaluit Amateur Hockey Association received a plane-load of equipment delivered by Glen Gretzky on behalf of the Wayne Gretzky Foundation to support hockey playing youth who would otherwise be unable to participate in hockey through a lack of locally available, affordable equipment.
Ford Dealers' Hockey Equipment Drive
The Ford Dealers' Hockey Equipment Drive in support of the Wayne Gretzky Foundation saw over 350 Ford dealers across Canada participate in a used equipment drive. Partnering with local minor hockey and sporting associations Ford dealers in each community invited the donation of used equipment, which was cleaned, repaired and donated to young athletes throughout the community. In total, over 850 pairs of skates, 580 pairs of gloves, 450 helmets and countless pads, sticks, pucks, bags and other miscellaneous pieces of clothing and equipment were collected and passed on to less fortunate children, in the first year alone.
Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario
The Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario's, Heart & Stroke Restart a Heart, Restart a Life initiative is responsible for placing more than 800 Automated External Defibrillators (AED's) in over 50 Ontario municipalities under their public access defibrillator program. The Wayne Gretzky Foundation supports this initiative with the purchase of 50 defibrillators and training, ensuring placement in a variety of hockey arenas and community centres.
Canada's National Men's Sledge Hockey
Canada's National Men's Sledge Hockey Team received funding from the Wayne Gretzky Foundation to enable them to attend the 2004 IPC Sledge Hockey World Championship in Sweden. Since that time the team has gone on to win the gold at the 2006 Winter Olympics, and the 2007 and 2008 world championships.
