Power Of An Assist

Tuesday, May 19th, 2009

Article by Don Schwartz, WG Authentic / Visit Ford Wayne Gretzky Classic presented by Samsung

Wayne Gretzky understands the power of an assist – after all, he tallied 1,963 during his NHL career. His charitable foundation also makes plenty of assists, coming to the aid of less fortunate youth, having raised more than $1 million to date for kids in hockey.

One of the Wayne Gretzky Foundation’s largest fundraisers – the Ford Wayne Gretzky Classic golf tournament – makes an annual assist to the Foundation in large part from the work of approximately 650 volunteers, who make countless assists of their own.

“We couldn’t run the tournament without volunteers,” said Kelly Dixon-Boldt, director of volunteers for the Ford Wayne Gretzky Classic. “It wouldn’t exist without a volunteer base.”

Volunteers are the lifeblood of the tournament, providing the necessary manpower to make the fundraising event come together. Volunteers are called upon to fulfill a variety of duties from registering players to marshalling the course to doing the individual scoring to caddying and all points in between.

This year’s tournament is scheduled to tee off on July 6 at the Georgian Bay Club and the Raven at Lora Bay in idyllic Collingwood, Ontario. The pro-am style tournament is a stop on the PGA Nationwide Tour and pairs amateurs and celebrities along with professional golfers. The unique format not only entertains the galleries in attendance, but provides a memorable experience for volunteers who get to work alongside notable athletes and entertainers from the past and present.

“We always call these jobs ‘getting inside the ropes,’” Dixon-Boldt said. “Anything that gets you inside the ropes and gets you closer to the players are usually the jobs that require the most number of volunteers. If somebody’s caddying for one of the pros or celebrities, they get to be right with that group the whole time. They get to watch them and interact with them and talk with them and all that kind of stuff.”

Celebrities at past classics have included the likes of Charles Barkley, John Elway, Alan Thicke and Mark Messier. Confirmed for this year’s Ford Wayne Gretzky Classic are five-time World and Olympic Champion Donovan Bailey, former NHL star Scott Thornton and current member of the Calgary Flames, Mike Cammalleri, with more to be named later.

The chance to be ‘inside the ropes,’ along with the opportunity to give back to less fortunate youth and simply enjoy summertime in the Blue Mountain countryside, are reasons why the Classic has a volunteer retention rate of nearly 80-percent from last year’s event. However, there are still plenty of openings for people willing to give of themselves to help raise money for charity, regardless of their golf knowledge.

“Those who just want to get involved because they know it’ll be a fun event and they have friends who perhaps are involved in the event as well generally get involved in the non-golf related committees,” Dixon-Boldt said. “That includes registration and helping to organize the volunteers. We need to have a volunteer group in charge of the volunteers themselves, making sure everyone gets fed, has drinks on the golf course and those types of things. There are certainly committees that are more related to people who know the game of golf, so people who feel confident and know the game would normally fall into the walking, scoring and/or marshalling and caddying positions.”

Dixon-Boldt also notes that volunteering at the Classic is not limited to individual commitments.

“We’re also getting non-profit groups and groups of friends to take on the responsibility of marshalling a hole,” she said. “You can gather 10 of your friends and take on responsibility of marshalling a specific hole on one of the golf courses for the entire tournament. So you kind of make it kind of like your own hole.”

While money raised at the tournament goes towards the Foundation as a whole, local Collingwood-area charities also benefit from the assist volunteers provide.

“There are a lot of people supportive of the tournament because it does give back to some local charities as well those that many of the volunteers are involved with,” Dixon-Boldt said. “It’s nice for people to know that the money goes back to the Foundation but there’s also some part of it that stays locally in the community.”

People wanting to make an assist of their own can register to volunteer and select their area of interest at www.gretzky.com/golf.

Also new to this year’s tournament are the first three confirmed celebrity golfers –five-time World and Olympic Champion Donovan Bailey; former NHL star Scott Thornton; and  current member of the Calgary Flames, Mike Cammalleri.

Future Team Canada Beneficiaries Announced

Tuesday, February 10th, 2009

CALGARY, AB – Hockey Canada has announced the 13 minor hockey teams that have been chosen as the beneficiaries of this year’s ‘Future Team Canada’ program. In December, Hockey Canada partnered with the Wayne Gretzky Foundation and the Hockey Canada Foundation to launch the fifth year of the ‘Future Team Canada’ program that rewards and recognizes minor hockey teams across the nation for the amount of heart they show rather than the amount of games they win.

Entries consisted of a team roster and a short essay outlining their team’s values, special characteristics, community involvement and dedication that could make them a ‘Future Team Canada’.

Every player on each of the 13 teams will receive a Team Canada jersey, stick and a hockey bag bearing the Wayne Gretzky Foundation and Hockey Canada logos. Along with this comprehensive equipment package, each team will also receive a $1,999 cash award to be used for team development activities, and a coaching package consisting of development materials, a Hockey Canada Coaches’ Club membership and equipment.

Awarded teams include:

  • Powell River Kings Bantam
  • Vancouver Thunderbirds Atom
  • Leduc Roughnecks Novice
  • Greendell Falcons Peewee
  • Eel River Bar Hawks Midget
  • Moncton Redhawks Atom
  • Bar Arena Rovers Atom
  • Elks Slovak Legion Novice
  • Metro Boston Pizza Midget
  • North River Girls Bantam
  • Humber Valley Sharks Peewee
  • Kanata Cyclones Peewee
  • Gravelbourg Stars Peewee

“Although all 13 teams are to be commended for being selected, each and every team entry merits recognition and they should all be considered champions,” said Wayne Gretzky. “The success of this program was evident by the excellent quality of the essays received and the difficulty in selecting the 13 teams that will benefit from this unique initiative. When all was said and done, the thirteen teams that were chosen are deserving of the title ‘Future Team Canada’ for their dedication and commitment to the true spirit of our game.”

The Wayne Gretzky Foundation believes that hockey instills many positive life skills and contributes to the physical, emotional and social growth of young people. Canada’s national teams share and promote these positive life skills in the work they do with young Canadians.

“Once again we are very pleased to have been part of this exceptional program which recognizes another 13 very worthy youth hockey teams from across the country. During the last five years, over 1,000 deserving young Canadians have participated in this remarkable program,” said Noel Fader, director of fund development for Hockey Canada. “Those selected as the program beneficiaries are truly representative of the Hockey Canada Foundation’s shared values and our mission to support the Hockey Canada dream by promoting passion, participation, and excellence in our game.

The outcomes of the ‘Future Team Canada’ recognition program and the principles championed by the Wayne Gretzky Foundation, the Hockey Canada Foundation, and Hockey Canada demonstrate a shared vision for the future of our game.

99, Samsung, Best Buy Make Powerplay for Minor Hockey

Friday, November 7th, 2008

Donation To Wayne Gretzky Foundation Helps Support 99 Minor Hockey Associations

The Great One is helping 99 minor hockey clubs across the country kick-off a great hockey season. Through a team effort with Samsung Electronics Canada and Best Buy Canada, the Wayne Gretzky Foundation is presenting 99 minor league associations with a $1,000 bursary to help them cover expenses related running their 2008-2009 minor hockey programs.

Earlier this year, the companies launched the 99 Reasons campaign to help raise funds for the Foundation. During the campaign period, a portion of the proceeds from the sale of all Samsung TVs at Best Buy locations was donated to the Wayne Gretzky Foundation. Best Buy stores also sold exclusive Wayne Gretzky commemorative stickers for $0.99, with all proceeds of the sale going directly to the Foundation. The total donation, $99,000, represented a combination of funds raised through the retail promotion and monies previously committed from Samsung and Best Buy.

“Minor hockey clubs across the country often struggle with covering the costs associated with running their programs,” said Gretzky. “Thanks to Samsung and Best Buy, my Foundation can now help 99 of minor hockey associations. I truly appreciate their generous support and hope that it will help more youngsters have the opportunity to get involved in the game.”

Gretzky unveiled the 99 Reasons campaign at an event in Vancouver earlier this year where he met with an atom hockey team from St. Albert, Alberta, who won a contest related to the 99 Reasons promotion. The squad from the Edmonton suburb received an all-expense-paid trip to Vancouver and a once-in-a-lifetime chance where they met their hockey hero.

“Hockey is part of the fabric of Canada and Samsung is a major supporter of the game,” said Benjamin Lee, President of Samsung Electronics Canada. “We are thrilled to have completed this successful campaign with Best Buy and that the Wayne Gretzky Foundation can now use these funds to support these Canadian minor hockey associations.”

Created in 2002, the Wayne Gretzky Foundation is dedicated to helping disadvantaged youngsters throughout North America participate in the sport of hockey. As a major supporter of hockey in Canada, the Foundation was a natural fit for Samsung’s Four Seasons of Hope program. As a major national retailer and an active member of the communities in which it does business, Best Buy was a natural draft choice for this team.

“Soon after launching the 99 Reasons campaign in our stores, it was obvious that Wayne Gretzky continues to be a great inspiration,” said Martin Vander Velden, VP of Merchandising, Best Buy Canada. “Our team members across the country threw their support behind the Gretzky Foundation and have contributed towards our Best Buy for Kids program goal to empower youth by helping them excel in school, engage in their communities, and develop life and leadership skills. We also had a tremendous response from our customers who truly made this campaign a winner.”
