The Great Stomp Returns

Monday, August 31st, 2009

The Ontario Lung Association wants you to put your best foot forward at The Great Stomp, literally a “full-bodied” fundraising event held at No. 99 Wayne Gretzky Estate Winery in the Niagara region Saturday, September 19.

In a race against the clock, teams of four will jump into a vat of ripened grapes and stomp, squish and stickhandle their way to winning by producing the most grape juice within an allotted time.  Proceeds from the event will benefit the Ontario Lung Association’s lung health programs that help people of all ages with breathing problems in the Niagara Region.

“We want folks to roll up their pants and work their way to purple feet at The Great Stomp,” says Walter Gretzky, Honourary Event Chair.   “Lung disease is very important to the Gretzky family and we are pleased to host this fun and unusual fundraising event that is sure to get everyone chuckling as we raise money for a very important cause.”  Members of the Hamilton Tiger Cats may also find themselves breathless as they tackle the juicy challenge and cheer on participants.

Companies too are encouraged to go from “good to grape” as The Great Stomp offers a fun, team-building opportunity for staff in the picturesque setting of the No. 99 Wayne Gretzky Winery.  The event also features wine tastings of Gretzky’s finest vintages, food samplings, tours of the estate, entertainment and much more.

For a growing number of Canadians, the simple act of breathing is becoming more and more difficult:

  • Asthma rates continue to climb.
  • The incidence and prevalence of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is rising at an alarming rate, especially among women
  • Our environment, and, in particular, air quality, is a leading public concern
  • And tobacco use – although on a modest decline – remains this country’s number one preventable cause of death

The Ontario Lung Association offers quality information when people need it the most.  Consumers looking for information about asthma, allergies, COPD or tips on how to quit smoking can call 1-888-344-LUNG (5864) and speak to a certified respiratory educator.  All products and services are free of charge to Ontario residents.

To register a team or to pledge a team member, visit  www.on.lung.ca or call our Niagara office of the Ontario Lung Association at 1-800-790-5527.

Brantford’s David Hearn was “honoured” Tuesday to receive the Award of Merit for distinguished service to the annual Walter Gretzky/CNIB Celebrity Golf Classic and Charity Auction at the Brantford Golf and Country Club.

“It was a surprise to me that they were honouring me this year,” said the 30-year-old professional golfer, who represents the BGCC on the PGA’s Nationwide Tour.

“I’m honoured to receive it. We do a lot of charity work and to get recognized for it is pretty nice.”

Hearn is a graduate of North Park Collegiate and the University of Wyoming.

He’s been coming to the Gretzky tournament and hitting tee shots off a designated par-five hole for each group in the tournament. The groups pay $20 for the tee shot and the money raised benefits the CNIB.

“I have a lot of fun coming out here and hitting these tee shots and I guess a little bit goes a long way,” said Hearn.

“A lot of people have done a lot for this event and it’s nice that they have considered me as an important part of this event.

“It’s been fortunate that the way my schedule has worked out that I’ve been able to come back every year.”

Brantford businessman Dave Loney and radio host and comedian Jim Jerome were presented with the Dan Gallagher Memorial CNIB Friendship Award.

Loney has been a longtime supporter of the Gretzky tournament.

And Jerome, who has instrumental in raising over $30,000 a year for several years for the Walter Gretzky tournament in Edmonton, has been the emcee for the Brantford event for several years.

The Hella Goreski Memorial Award was presented to Mike Foster, who has been a volunteer with the tournament for the past 15 years.

The 2009 Sponsorship Award was given to Boston Pizza for its involvement with the tournament.

Walter’s CNIB Event

City businessman Dave Loney has been a longtime supporter of the Gretzky family and the many charities to which it contributes.

Loney, owner and president of Anthrafilter Ltd., dug deep into his pockets to show his support Monday night at the Brantford Golf and Country Club to show his support at the auction portion of the annual Walter Gretzky/CNIB Celebrity Golf Classic and Charity Auction.

“I enjoy the Gretzky family and I like to help the less fortunate,” said the 71-year-old Loney.

“I like to support the CNIB (Canadian National Institute for the Blind) and I certainly like the Gretzky tournament.

“My two girls (Kim and Lori) went to school with the Gretzkys.”

Loney bid $1,200 to purchase a Wayne Gretzky No. 99 Edmonton Oilers jersey signed by the Great One.

It was the highest priced item in the auction, which brought in $16,654.

Loney also purchased a Pat Hickey-signed hockey stick, a Walter Gretzky Golf Classic shirt signed by the celebrities at last year’s tournament, a Wayne Gretzky Estates tasting certificate for up to 10 people, a Wayne and Walter Gretzky “Younger Years” print signed by Walter, a 1980 Civic Centre Shootout picture Gretzky, Hickey and goaltender Rick Wamsley that is signed by Hickey, and a signed Wayne Gretzky “Hanging Up Skates” New York Rangers picture.

Loney also purchased several items from the silent auction tables.

“I just got taken up with this but the whole event is terrific,” said Loney, who prefers to stay out of the limelight.

He has purchased sports memorabilia at the Gretzky auction over the years but he’s never bought as many items in one night as he did Monday.

What will he do with his new purchases.

“I told someone that one day they may come back so someone else can enjoy them and we’ll raise more money,” said the soft-spoken Loney.

This year’s money total was down from last year’s exceptional total of $24,625.

However, last year a package to NASCAR Nationwide and Sprint Cup races at Lowe’s Motor Speedway in October in Charlotte, N. C., were sold during the regular auction along with several NASCAR memorabilia items.

This year, the NASCAR package, which includes a NASCAR garage tour, a tour of Hendrick Motorsports and a CARQUEST gift bag, will be sold through a silent auction at Ohsweken Speedway when it hosts the World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series, July 28-29.

The golf portion of the event will be played today at the country club.

CNIB Celebrity Golf Classic Returns

Sunday, June 14th, 2009

The world’s Number One hockey dad Walter Gretzky is getting ready once again to play host to one of the season’s premier events.  The Honorary Chair of the CNIB Celebrity Golf Classic & Memorabilia Auction will welcome hundreds to Brantford’s prestigious Golf & Country Club for the two-day event that bears his name.

This year the event begins on the Monday evening July 13th with a memorabilia auction that is sure to please everyone, from the serious collector to the interested hobbyist.  Auction items include autographed photos, personal effects, and numerous objects of interest from celebrities in every walk of fame.   The entertainment industry, sports figures, and other dignitaries will all be represented and have artefacts from which to choose.  Preview will begin at 6:00 p.m. with the auction getting underway at 7:00.  Previous year’s items have included, but are certainly not limited to signed NHL jerseys and sticks, autographed movie scripts, celebrity signed photos, and nostalgic collectibles. All are welcome, and admission is free.  There will also be a silent auction providing participants with an opportunity to capitalize on some great gift items and celebrity memorabilia at bargain prices as well.

To date this event, including both the auction and golf tournament, have raised in excess of $1,000,000 for the CNIB. The money raised is used to provide programs and services for the visually impaired, enabling them to live a more independent and improved quality lifestyle. It also provides for scholarships awarded to visually impaired students in their first year of post-graduate studies.  Walter proudly states that, “Without this program, many of these students would not be able to pursue an education, or to realize a rewarding career in their chosen field.” Yet, what he remains most proud of is the participation of so many individuals who generously give of themselves to make this event the success that it is.  He adds, “It means so much to me, and even more to them… you have no idea… Thank you, Thank you, Thank you.”

This year promises to be every bit as eventful as previous years as we hope to significantly add to our already impressive total contribution to the CNIB.  The merchandise is arriving daily, being catalogued, and prepared for auction.  Everyone involved is hard at work in preparation.

Once again this year, the auction will take place July 13th, with a scramble format golf tournament the following day Tuesday, July 14th, 2009 at the Brantford Golf & Country Club on Ava Road, Brantford, Ontario.  For more information contact Sue Bartlett at 519.753.3486.

We look forward to seeing you there!

Walter’s Street Hockey Tournament

Monday, June 1st, 2009

Article by Don Schwartz, WG Authentic

The Gretzky name obviously means a lot to the residents of Brantford, Ontario –  the small, blue-collar town located near Toronto, Ontario. But it’s more than the hockey accomplishments of its native son Wayne that has made the name famous.

Walter Gretzky is affectionately referred to as Canada’s hockey dad and his commitment to charity is well known across his homeland. Though his support for foundations such as the Canadian National Institute for the Blind has wide-ranging impacts, his care for causes right in his hometown is just as strong.

“Walter is an absolute treasure for the City of Brantford,” said Pat Shewchuk, Tournament Capital of Ontario Coordinator for Brantford Parks and Recreation. “I’ve been lucky enough to have known Walter for several years and worked with him on a variety of events. We are purely blessed to have a gentleman of his caliber in our city. He is, in my opinion, our hometown hero without a doubt.”

Among the many Brantford-area charitable events he supports is the Walter Gretzky Street Hockey Tournament, set for June 5-9 at the Ball Hockey International venue in Brantford. Now in its third year, the event aims to raise funds for the Brantford Sports Facilities Infrastructure Legacy Fund, which replaces and refurbishes aging youth and adult sports facilities and infrastructure in the area.

“When we decided that we wanted to hold a special event, we knew we would go to Walter and ask him if we could use his name,” Shewchuk said. “He was intrigued by the idea and, of course, always supports our community, so he said absolutely and Wally’s been on board since day one. The first year of the tournament he was there every single day, signing autographs and taking pictures. He’s a tireless person and so generous with his time and the commitments we ask of him. He is such a giving individual, for sure.”

Between the Walter Gretzky Street Hockey Tournament and a Brantford day at a Toronto Blue Jays baseball game – in addition to support from local sponsors, such as SC Johnson – more than $40,000 has been raised for the Legacy Fund. With the growth of the Street Hockey Tournament, that number is expected to increase. The tournament, which features both youth and adult categories, has drawn participants from as far away as Sarnia and all throughout Southern Ontario.

Organizers anticipate a bit of extra attention at this year’s event, thanks in part to participation from Hollywood producer, director, screenwriter, actor and comic book writer Kevin Smith. The man behind pop films such as Clerks and Chasing Amy and known for his role as “Silent Bob” has entered a team of celebrities in the tournament, including the counterpart to Silent Bob, Jay (Jason Mewes).

“It’s increased the visibility of the tournament,” Shewchuk said. “Our goal has always been – my vision personally and others on our committee – that the Walter Gretzky Street Hockey Tournament can be a signature event for the City of Brantford. I believe down the road people from all over will come to this. I think this year is a kick start, to where if people are only coming to see Kevin, but then they see everything else that’s going on in the tournament and say ‘This was such a good event I think I’m going to register a team next year.’”

In addition to the more than 70 teams competing, the event features an exhibition from the Hockey Hall of Fame, performances by Guinness Book of World Records stilt walker Doug Hunt, music provided by Brantford-area bands, a Guitar Hero contest and a mini rink for the youngest in attendance. A Silent Auction is also planned, featuring signed memorabilia from Wayne and Kevin, along with a variety of other items donated by local businesses.
