Here it is…..from my first practice of the year. It’s been a long summer of baseball, and there were many times when I couldn’t help but let my mind drift back to hockey as I saw the Arizona Diamondbacks this year. The two teams remain similar. Yet, as the team fell from first place, there was something that I knew that I had to ask Wayne Gretzky: Is he concerned at all about some of his young players now making their way in basically their second year of the NHL.
I bring this up because D Backs manager Bob Melvin said at the end of the season that one of his team’s biggest challenges was the fact that several young players more or less had no competition for their jobs. Listen in on Wayne from after Monday’s skate. It is the last question from the scrum.

Amazing what the prospect of organizational depth does for a roster and for motivation.
