Panger Report

Friday, November 21st, 2008

Wayne Gretzky and his Phoenix Coyotes played the 1st game of a 4 games swing that takes them from the East Coast from Carolina to Columbus.

He had to be happy with certain parts of the teams performance, as the 5-2 loss didn’t tell the whole story. The Hurricanes scored late to make it 4-2 and into an empty net to finish it off at 5-2. He wanted more scoring from his 2nd tier, needing to take pressure off of Jokinen and especially Doan. Doan did score his 11th goal in another strong game, while Kevin Porter notched his 4th of the season.

Derek Morris only played 6:30 before leaving with an undisclosed injury, Gretzky saying after the game he has been “banged up” and had a previous ankle injury, to go along with a finger injury.

Gretzky found a solid pairing in Keith Yandle and Ed Jovonovski, who had a strong game, especially down the stretch when they were needing to get on the board and tie the game. Yandle continues to make great strides. He is strong on the puck, making plays in both ends and has a presence about him. He grew up idolizing Ray Bourque, he picked up a few things along the way. All of them good. Like taking pucks off the boards, bringing it to a better angle and getting pucks to the net. He has great hockey sense.

Jovonovski needs to just play the game, move his feet, get in on the play, get a good hit in early and then let the game come to him. He is too good of a player to be playing the way he has in most games this season. This was a game that he had legs, and that is everything this day and age.

As a whole, Gretzky’s squad has to read situations better in the defensive zone, and be stronger on loose pucks. They were loose in front of their net on this night, and saw Eric Staal snap out of an 8 game goal scoring drought, with 3 goals. He wanted pucks in the net more than the Coyotes were willing to defend.

The Coyotes did create plenty of good chances and never gave up, in fact should have had a powerplay with around 5 minutes to go, as Staal got his stick between the legs of Porter, clearly an infraction, and the score 3-2 ‘Canes.

Enver Lisin was recalled from the AHL and is likely to be in the line up in Philly on Saturday. The Coyotes can’t score goals and could use a spark, even if it is short term. Mikael Tellqvist will be in goal against ther Flyers as he played a great game last year there in a win.

From there it is on to NY for a rare Monday game for the Coyotes and the 2nd game coached by Gretzky at MSG, as he got a win in his 1st game there last season.

Winless In Last Three

Wednesday, November 19th, 2008

Winless in their last three, the Coyotes have a day to work before they hit the road to North Carolina, Philadelphia, New York and Columbus. This will be a grueling trip. But first, they must digest losing in a shootout last night to Chicago. They came back, true. And yes, they got a point.

There is something to build on in terms of grit. But what has happened since the game in Columbus last week is a mystery. Will the road help cure some of their ills?

We’ll find out soon enough.

Shane Doan: A Class Act

Tuesday, November 18th, 2008

Let’s personalize this one, shall we? Tonight, one of the true great spirits in the world of pro sports takes to the ice for what will be his 900th career game. Shane Doan has reached that milestone, and for me, it seems like only yesterday when he was sent back to Springfield back in 97-98.  It was shocking for those of us covering the Coyotes.  He was “the future.”  What happened?  What was going wrong?

That’s ancient history now. Tonight we will celebrate his accomplishment on our coverage of the the Coyotes and the Blackhawks on Fox Sports Arizona. Pre-game at 7, face-off at 7:30.

Check out Wayne’s reaction to Shane’s 900th and just for the heckuva it, here’s the captain, as well:

On a personal note, I have covered the NBA. the NFL, MLB, men’s and woman’s tennis, the LPGA, the PGA, the Senior Tour, NASCAR, CART, Formula One, college baseball, football and basketball.  Heck, I even broadcast from the unlimited Hydroplane races at Firebird Lake, and, yes, I have to admit, I pretended that “Gravedigger” and the Monster Truck event was a sporting event.  Never.  Not once, have I ever come across a person like Shane Doan.  I can’t imagine coming to the rink and the “Doaner” not being there.  Last man off the ice.  Sitting at his locker.  Making the bus wait … and that’s ok.

As he said today, “I love to play the game.”  Isn’t that what it is supposed to be like?

The Goaltender Shuffle

Sunday, November 16th, 2008

Mick Kern appears courtesy of Live From Wayne Gretzky’s

Used to be a time when a guy could be dead sure who was the number one goaltender for any given NHL team.  Used to be a time a guy could reliably count on that goaltender to be between the pipes for the majority of games.   Used to be a time a guy could manage his fantasy hockey goaltenders with little effort.

Those days are gone.  Now, if you really want to have a fighting chance in your fantasy hockey league, you pretty much have to put other parts of your life on-hold, just to track the daily myriad of possibilites as to which goaltender gets the nod that night.

No doubt many a guy has allowed yardwork, homework, work work, and personal relationships to deteriorate thanks to the absolute need to scrutinize the daily internet hockey news in an attempt to ascertain who’s going to start in net.  No doubt a number of woman also find themselves in this same bind.

For starters, fantasy hockey is not real hockey.  Not even close.  That’s why they call it fantasy hockey.  To the uninitiated, it might sound as if the likes of Clare Danes, Mila Kunis, Zooey Deschanel, Jennifer Aniston and Sarah Silverman are skating around, with Scarlett Johansson in net.  Actually, that’s a fantasy hockey team alright, one which would probably outperform the team I’m currently managing, as long as they knew that Johansson was starting most games.

During our fantasy draft back in late September, I stayed away from goaltenders, until they started to go near the end of the first round.  Brodeur and Luongo left first.  I managed to get my paws on a goaltender I was confident would be solid for the season.

Marty Turco.

Okay, so that’s why they actually play the games.  The real hockey games, that is.  They play them just to cause major pain to the fools who dabble in the black art of fantasy hockey.

I stayed away from drafting a second goaltender, going with the belief, particularly in our league, that scoring numbers/plus-minus would win the day.  When the backup guys began to fall off-the-board, I had to change plans once again, and decide who would be goaler number two on my squad.

The choice came down to either Martin Biron or Cam Ward.  I dithered.  I looked for a coin to flip.  I quickly checked my email to see if Johansson had gotten back to me.  Finally, with precious little time remaining on the draft clock, I gulped, and took young Ward.

Which earned me the almost immediate wrath of fantasy hockey guru Rob Higgins, who, when he’s not screaming into a microphone, channelling his inner Lemmy, leads the way in pouring over stats and minutiae and dominating his hockey pool.  Or so he says.  No one’s actually thought to confirm these claims.

Regardless, the hasty slapdown by Higgins had me limping away in shame, quickly logging onto the nearest computer, and furtively scanning the waiver wire, trying to pick up a third netminder.

As luck would have it, Biron got off to a rotten start.  As luck would also have it, Ward wasn’t doing much better.  In fact, Michael Leighton appeared to be getting as many starts as Ward.

So naturally, doing what most poolies do, my knees jerked me into moving the mouse, hovering over Leighton’s name.  One click later, I had my third goaltender.  Since Turco was Turd-o, he was going to see a lot of pine on my team.  I wasn’t going to outright release him, bury him in the minors, lend him to a Russian team, or trade him to Boomer.  I was sure (I still am…really) that Marty will get his act together.

But until then, the two Hurricanes were going to rock my team.  I was going with a tandem, which broke most hockey pool “rules”, but I had to know I’d get four starts in a week, or risk losing valuable goaltending points.

Trouble is, Leighton didn’t do much, either.  So, naturally, I panicked, and dropped the bum, instead looking for comfort in the arms of Ty Conklin.  There was no way that Chris Osgood was gonna last, I told myself, and the Red Wings are stacked.

Mr. Shows got me some wins, but my goaltending was still preventing my team from performing to their full potential.  They were letting down the rest of the team, costing us points.  And then I started noticing Jeff Drouin-Deslauriers hanging around the rink.  He seemed to be getting some starts up in Edmonton, even though they had about 28 goaltenders on their roster.

So, naturally, I parted ways with Conklin and went with the hypen man.  Who. naturally, was returned to the bench in favour of Dwayne Roloson.  Which got me to noticing former St. Mike’s Majors’ netminder Peter Budaj, who appeared to be getting his game together in Denver.  But he’s been running hot-and-cold, so I’m waiting to see how he does over the next few games.  Which means he’ll be gone by then.

Turco was still on-and-off, while it seemed whenever Ward picked up a win in the Carolina net, I had him nailed to the bench.  For no explainable reason really, expect perhaps I was obsessing about my third goaltender, and neglected the rest of the team.   Sorry guys.

I see that Ty Conklin is still available.

We’re only seven weeks into the regular season, and I’m already exhausted.  Good thing we don’t put up any money on this madness.

When does baseball season start?

99 On Melrose Situation

Sunday, November 16th, 2008

Prior to Saturday’s game, just before Barry Melrose hit the airwaves on Hockey Night in Canada and referred to himself as “Daniel Boone” and “Kreskin” while defending his honor, Wayne met with several members of the media and one of the topics on the table was Melrose and his firing by Tampa Bay just 16 games into his first season there.

Stars 3 Coyotes 2

Sunday, November 16th, 2008

Riddle me this, Batman … How could a team that got it’s “butt kicked” in their last game, after a hard working practice session the following day, come out flat in their first game after the previous loss? I don’t get it.

It was almost a repeat of the game against Florida when the Coyotes gave a struggling Panther team a heavy dose of self confidence with a lack luster first period that included a goal and the lead. As we know, the Coyotes came storming back.

The Dallas Stars, however, are NOT the Florida Panthers. Dallas got the lead…..regained the lead after losing it, and won, snapping a three game losing streak in the process. A chance to move five points ahead of Dallas in the Pacific was squandered.

Suddenly, Wednesday’s game with Chicago now takes on added meaning. It’s a getaway game for a four game trip back east. On a more positive note, for perhaps the first time all season, and after being scratched in his last two games, Dan Carcillo finally looked like he belonged. That can only bode well on night’s like this one when the team needs a spark.

The tinder was too wet to ignite, tonight. Instead, it only smoldered. When the smoke clears, the Coyotes will wake up in the midst of a two game losing streak.

Wild Loss In Minnesota

Friday, November 14th, 2008

Everything that the Coyotes did right against Columbus, they did wrong against Minnesota. We knew this was possible, didn’t we? We have been told and have been telling others that with a very young group, there would be highs and lows.

This was unfortunate because they had a chance to come home with 4 points and could have leap frogged the Wild in the West. It didn’t happen. What DID happen wasn’t pretty. And the coach knew it….
